Allarta Life Science remembering Juliet Daniel, Board Member, Barbadian-Canadian scientist, and McMaster University Professor

Juliet Daniels

Allarta Life Science Inc. is deeply saddened by the passing, last week, of Juliet Daniel, a founding member of Allarta’s Board of Directors and a highly respected professor at McMaster University.

A Barbadian‑Canadian scientist and internationally recognised cancer biologist, Juliet devoted her career to understanding how the fundamental mechanics of cells shape human health—particularly how failures in cell‑to‑cell adhesion and signalling contribute to cancer. Her work included the discovery and naming of the gene Kaiso, a name she coined in reference to Caribbean calypso music—an intentional nod to her heritage and a reflection of how she brought her whole self into science.

Juliet’s passion for science was never abstract. She cared deeply about doing work that mattered—work that could change outcomes for patients—and she paired that drive with an extraordinary generosity of spirit. We learned from her every time we spoke.

At McMaster University, Juliet was recognised as a Distinguished University Professor, the institution’s highest honour, reflecting her lasting impact on scholarship and community. Her lab’s work advanced understanding of aggressive cancers, including triple‑negative breast cancer, and engaged directly with questions of cancer outcomes and inequities.

As importantly, Juliet was widely known as a mentor and advocate—supporting trainees and helping to build a more inclusive scientific community. She co‑founded the Canadian Black Scientists Network, underscoring her commitment to visibility, mentorship, and opportunity for Black researchers in STEM.

Since Allarta’s inception, Juliet has been generous with her insight, steadfast in her support, and remarkable for her human warmth. We will truly miss her. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, colleagues, and the many students who adored her.
